Mysuru: Following the successful rollout of Vehicle Tracking and Monitoring System (VTMS) in Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses, Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is planning to introduce a similar facility in Mysuru city buses by the end of 2026.
A team of 20 KSRTC experts is currently conducting a survey ahead of the proposed implementation. The system will cover all 380 buses operated by Mysuru city division, helping commuters plan their journeys more efficiently. VTMS has already been installed in 8,305 BMTC buses at a cost of Rs 30 crore, funded jointly by Union and state govts. With Mysuru expanding rapidly, Mysuru city division, which operates a fleet of 380 buses, the largest after BMTC, has been identified for the next phase of implementation. The division operates nearly 800 services daily, covering Mysuru city and surrounding areas, including T Narasipura, Nanjangud, Yelwal, Bilikere, Siddaramanahundi, Srirangapatna, HD Kote and Jayapura.

KSRTC Mysuru city divisional controller Jagadeesh Kumar said the survey team is mapping all routes operated by the city division and collecting details of authorised, unauthorised and demand bus stops, along with other operational requirements necessary for implementing VTMS. VTMS will enable passengers to track buses in real time through a dedicated mobile application, providing live location updates and estimated arrival timings. Apart from improving passenger convenience, the system will allow the corporation to monitor driver behaviour, helping reduce accidents and operational expenditure. In addition to the tracking system, these buses have been equipped with complaint-tracking devices and panic buttons to enhance passenger safety. The emergency response mechanism allows passengers to immediately alert KSRTC authorities during distress situations, enabling quicker intervention by control rooms, law enforcement agencies and the police. He added that the corporation plans to roll out the system in Mysuru city buses by the end of the year. Download the TOI App.
