Agartala: Former CM Manik Sarkar ’s convoy was allegedly attacked while the CPM veteran was travelling to a party organisational conference in Bamutia on Sunday.
Denying BJP involvement, party spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee said BJP does not engage in such acts and the alleged attack could be a spontaneous public reaction linked to grievances from the Left Front’s 25-year stay in office. CPM MLA Nayan Sarkar alleged that BJP workers stopped Sarkar’s convoy at Kalibazar on the northern outskirts of Agartala, vandalised escort vehicles and hurled eggs at his car. Sarkar was unhurt and later taken safely to the party office.
CPM sources said the convoy was blocked for about 40 minutes, ‘go back’ slogans were raised, and one escort vehicle was damaged. The convoy remained stranded until CPM supporters gathered, protested and forced the group to disperse. CPM state secretary and leader of the opposition in assembly Jitendra Chaudhury urged CM Manik Saha to restore normalcy and avoid political vendetta.
