Chandrapur : Maharashtra ’s chief wildlife warden M Srinivas Reddy has ordered the capture of male tiger T-122, responsible for three human deaths and a serious injury in the Saoli forest range. Reddy authorised the chief conservator of forests, Chandrapur Circle, to execute the operation with an expert team.
The capture order, issued on Sept 24, follows four serious human-tiger conflict incidents since Aug 1, besides 23 livestock kills. Hiraman Sakhare of Samda was killed on Aug 1, Namdeo Kukudkar of Keroda was injured on Aug 26, Vasudev Wakudkar of Nilsani Petgaon was killed on Sept 16, and Hemant Bhurse of Samda was killed on Sept 21. The villages living under the tiger threat include Vyhad Budruk, Samda, Sonapur, Nilsani Petgaon, Kapsi, Kadholi, Sirsi, Sakhri, Jibgaon, Petgaon, Jamb Budruk, Petgaon Raitwari, Haramba, Umri, Donala and Upari. The repeated sightings of the tiger on farms and near roads have heightened fear among residents. A committee constituted to assess the conflict recommended permanent capture, noting the concentration of tigers and the potential for further human-wildlife conflict. Officials have been conducting round-the-clock patrols, camera-trap surveillance and awareness drives in the area to prevent further conflict. The committee also warned that public anger and fear could spiral if another attack occurs.
The order permits an expert team to tranquilise and capture T-122 when necessary. The order is valid until Nov 30.
