NAVI MUMBAI: A fatal accident occurred at an accident-prone black spot on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in Bhor Ghat near Dheku village in Khopoli, Raigad, on Monday morning, after a container trailer rammed into the rear of a tempo, sending both vehicles plunging about 35 feet down a slope. The accident occurred on the Mumbai-bound carriageway around 8.15 am. Sachin Hire, senior inspector of Khopoli police station, said the accident occurred near the 36/300-km mark. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Kaif Mohammad Alam (24), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, while the injured tempo driver was identified as Miraj Sirajuddin Shaikh (29), from Bihar. They crashed through the roadside metal railing and plunged about 35 feet down the slope.
The trailer driver was attempting to avoid hitting a car ahead when he moved towards the left side of the road and rammed into the tempo, according to police. Police said the injured tempo driver later lodged a complaint in connection with the accident. “Accordingly, acting on a complaint by the injured tempo driver Shaikh, an FIR was registered against the deceased trailer driver Alam under relevant BNS sections and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving causing his own death,” SI Hire said.
The container trailer driver was killed, while the tempo driver sustained severe injuries. The accident was captured on the dashcam of a passing motorist. The footage shows the trailer apparently losing control while travelling down the steep gradient in the Bhor Ghat section near Dheku village. The impact sent both vehicles off the highway.
