Mumbai: An ambitious goal has been set to make the fleet of the MSRTC ( Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation ), the lifeline of Maharashtra , 100% electric by 2037. The state bus corporation on Monday announced that the approximately 5,000 diesel buses entering the fleet will the last such buses, after which electric buses will be phased in completely.
Currently, the ST fleet consists of about 14,000 buses, of which 1,100 are e-buses. 5,000 older buses in the fleet will be scrapped in a phased manner according to regulations. Notably, a campaign to convert older buses that have been in use for seven to eight years into electric vehicles will be launched starting in 2027. Since diesel buses have a lifespan of 15 years and e-buses have a lifespan of 20 years, this is expected to help save significantly on ST’s fuel costs.
