Prices of small onions and lemons have also climbed to Rs 90-100 per kg and Rs 150-200 per kg respectively. Because production of the crop has declined there, vegetable sellers said supplies of beans transported from Tamil Nadu have declined.

As small onions are exported, exporters are purchasing all the good quality stock,“ said general secretary of the Ernakulam Market Stall Owners’ Association Shameed N H. “Prices of these items have been rising over the past one month. We do not expect the price of beans to rise further. Customers will not buy them if prices go any higher. However, the price of Ooty variety beans (dark green beans) has not risen. The soaring temperature has increased demand for lemons, leading to a price rise as well. Stakeholders feel lemon prices may rise further. However, prices of many other vegetables, including cabbage and big onions, have not risen in the market. Download the TOI App.
