Kolkata: A day after Pragati Maidan cops arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly wrongfully restraining, assaulting and outraging the modesty of a young woman at a nightclub inside a prominent five-star hotel located along EM Bypass near Science City in the early hours of Sunday, cops said they have recovered clinching evidence against the accused in the form of CCTV footage.
The incident occurred around 2 am on Sunday, when the 20-year-old complainant, a resident of New Alipore, visited the disco located inside the five-star property along with a group of eight friends, according to police. The police were alerted through an emergency call at the Dial 100 control room. The survivor stated in her complaint that while they were at the venue, the accused, aided and abetted by others, confronted her group. The suspect allegedly subjected the complainant to wrongful restraint, physically assaulted her and used extremely filthy and abusive language intended to insult her modesty. Following the altercation and physical assault, the accused and his aides fled the scene.
The CCTV shows the accused, identified as Mohammed Rafey Azim (24), a trader and a resident of Bhukailash Road in Kidderpore and Tiljala Road in the Beniapukur area, assaulting the victim and her friends outside the nightclub. Cops, however, have confirmed that the victim has named the lone accused as the culprit.
We believe that his accomplices were present when he initially passed objectionable comments at the victim,” said an investigating officer. “We have applied to the court and she shall be recording her statement before a magistrate,” added the officer. “We are writing to the JW Marriott hotel authorities to share footage from inside the nightclub. We will receive them soon. the CCTV footage will help ascertain if others were involved While we have only one FIR named accused. The woman, who has settled in the city, hails from north Bengal.
