Lucknow: The core committee of the UP BJP on Monday held intense deliberations on the prospective candidates for Rajya Sabha and MLC polls scheduled next month.
The Rajya Sabha elections have emerged as a major political issue in the state, with elections due for 10 seats from Uttar Pradesh on Oct 16. The core committee also discussed the names for election to 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council from Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies. Polling for these constituencies is scheduled for Oct 23. The BJP sees the elections as more than a contest for Legislative Council seats, viewing them as an important test of its organisational readiness before the 2027 assembly elections.
Of these, the BJP currently holds eight seats, while the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party hold one seat each. Party leaders are understood to be weighing factors such as social and regional representation while preparing the list. This includes five Graduates’ seats and six Teachers’ seats.
The meeting, attended by chief minister Yogi Adityanath , deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, Uttar Pradesh BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary and state general secretary (organisation) Dharampal Singh, was called just a day before the announcement of the poll notification for the upper house of Parliament and the state legislature.
