Varanasi: Two cattle smugglers from Punjab were arrested following exchange of fire with Nonahara cops in Ghazipur district early Monday. One of them suffered bullet injury in leg. Cops recovered cattle laden truck and firearm from them.
Police identified the injured cattle smuggler as Paramjit Singh, 26, and his accomplice as Gurpant Singh, 25, from Ludhiana (Punjab). After recovering country made pistol, cartridges, a truck and 10 cattle police rushed injured smuggler to the district hospital.
Kasimabad circle officer Anubhav Rajarshi said that Nonahara police station in charge, with his team, was on the night patrol when Atwamor outpost alerted them about a suspicious truck moving from Ghazipur Ghat towards Bihar via Mohammadabad. However, the occupants fired at the police team and tried to escape, the CO said. During initial interrogation, they confessed that said they were transporting cattle from Punjab to Bihar.
Acting on the input, police set up a barricade near Atwamor bridge and signalled the vehicle to stop. In retaliatory firing by cops, one of the accused sustained a bullet injury on his left leg.
