Pune: State govt plans to grow the Pune economic region’s economy to $220 billion (around Rs 21 lakh crore) by 2036 by developing a growth hub. To achieve this target, the region needs to grow at 10% compared to the current rate of 6% to 6.5%, a govt statement read. The region currently does business annually worth Rs 6.5 lakh crore. Govt has planned 58 priority projects that focus on six sectors — manufacturing, automotive and electric vehicle (EV) production, engineering goods, defence, robotics, electronics and semiconductors and biotechnology. The investments are expected to generate up to 20 lakh new jobs, adding to the 56 lakh in the region at the moment. GCCs are expected to account for 4 lakh of these jobs. Govt also aims to host 10,000 startups and upskill 1.5 to 2 lakh technology professionals in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and cybersecurity. Key concepts include Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj fort circuit, connecting Shivneri, Lohagad, Rajgad and Sinhagad; water tourism hubs at Pavana and Bhatghar; a 600 km Sahyadri open trekking trail; a convention centre; and a leopard safari in Junnar. To increase the share of public transport from 13% to 50%, the plan has proposed 11 railway projects, 13 road projects, a 250 km metro network, a fleet of up to 14,000 buses and six multimodal transport hubs.

The plan includes developing an EV and future mobility hub, a high-tech engineering park and manufacturing centres for electronics, defence and robotics and attracting Global Capability Centres (GCCs) investment. Govt further plans to generate revenue through fort and lake tourism, sports and adventure tourism, wellness and wedding tourism, event tourism, wildlife tourism and religious-cultural tourism. Govt has tasked ISEG Foundation and McKinsey & Company to work with NITI Aayog and other agencies to come up with a plan for the growth hub. Download the TOI App.
