Lucknow: Reaching out to individuals who have lost limbs in accidents, the Ashok Singhal Foundation distributed prosthetic limbs and mobility aid to 31 people during a special outreach programme in Ayodhya . Organised as part of the centenary birth celebrations of former international president of Vishwa Hindu Parishad late Ashok Singhal, the five-day camp is being held at Karsevakpuram from Sept 27 to Oct 1. Another beneficiary, Mamta from Etawah, lost a leg in a railway accident at Hazrat Nizamuddin station while travelling for a Delhi police recruitment examination. The initiative seeks to identify and support people requiring rehabilitation and assistive devices, helping them regain mobility and independence. Now in its sixth edition, the annual programme invites specially-abled people to register in advance, following which health workers and technical experts assess their requirements. Beneficiaries are provided artificial limbs, calipers, crutches, hearing aids, spectacles and other assistive devices free of cost. Treasurer of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Mahesh Bhagchandka is the chairperson of the foundation while former general secretary of the Tust Champat Rai is among the founding members of the organisation. “Registered beneficiaries are called in advance so that health workers can take precise measurements before ordering prosthetic fitments. Among the beneficiaries were Shakuntala and her daughter Surekha from Rae Bareli, who lost their legs after being hit by a truck three years ago.
Similarly, eye examinations are carried out beforehand to ensure suitable corrective lenses are provided,” said Amardeep Kamal of Ashok Singhal Eye Care Hospital. Ayodhya mayor Girish Pati Tripathi said such programmes help restore confidence and dignity among differently-abled people while enabling them to lead more independent lives.
