Madikeri : A tusker housed at Dubare Elephant Camp since April died on Tuesday despite receiving continuous treatment from the forest department for over five months.
The elephant, which was captured in the Arehalli area of Belur taluk in neighbouring Hassan district on April 18 and brought to the camp, was suffering from injuries sustained in a fight and had a broken tusk. Despite immediate emergency treatment, including intravenous fluids and intensive care, it failed to respond and died at 9.50am, Abhishek said. However, preliminary veterinary findings indicate that the elephant may have died due to complications arising from a long-standing bone fracture, chronic illness and systemic exhaustion.
A digital X-ray examination confirmed a fracture in the elephant’s left elbow bone. Based on the experts’ recommendations, advanced treatment was continued, and the elephant was released from the kraal to reduce pressure on the injured leg. Forest department veterinarians kept the elephant in isolation to shield it from stress and administered a steady regimen of antibiotics, painkillers and nutritional supplements, said Madikeri DCF Abhishek. To provide advanced care, a team of expert wildlife veterinarians from Wildlife SOS was brought in for a joint health assessment. On Sunday, specialists also applied a fibreglass cast to stabilise the fractured limb. However, the elephant suddenly collapsed on Tuesday.
