Ahmedabad: The role of angadias is being probed in the alleged Rs 680 crore bogus political donations racket in which money given to political parties was routed back to donors after deducting commissions.
CID has registered FIRs against four registered unrecognised political parties (RUPPs) based on income tax department complaints. Office-bearers of the parties and chartered accountants have also been named as accused. The parties named include Swatantrata Abhivyakti Party, Ahmedabad-based Satyavadi Rakshak Party and Garib Kalyan Party, along with another RUPP whose name was not immediately available.
Officials said the Rs 680 crore figure is based on preliminary findings. CID will also scrutinise audit reports filed with Election Commission of India to determine whether contribution and expenditure details were falsely reported. Donors allegedly deposited money into the parties’ bank accounts and received donation receipts to claim tax benefits, according to the income tax department. The funds were then allegedly withdrawn against bogus purchases or expenses supported by purportedly fake bills. After deducting commissions, the parties allegedly returned the remaining money to donors through cash channels, including angadias. CID’s economic offences wing is examining bank trails, donation receipts, angadia slips and payment records and trying to trace the absconding accused. The I-T department has alleged that the parties had little or no genuine political activity and were used to facilitate the transactions. The role of chartered accountants is under investigation, with officials examining whether they prepared or certified allegedly bogus audit reports for the political parties and linked entities.
