Kochi : Eloor municipality has decided to form a stray dog management committee to coordinate measures for controlling stray dogs and ensure public safety in accordance with govt directions, the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, and orders of the Supreme Court and Kerala High Court.
The committee will coordinate measures including stray dog management, monitoring and legally permitted euthanasia. The decision was taken at a council meeting chaired by vice-chairperson Leela Babu on Tuesday.

“The municipality will maintain records of stray dog numbers, sterilisation, vaccination, treatment, capture, release and legally permitted euthanasia,” a municipality official said. The committee will be headed by the local body chairperson, with the secretary as convener. Its members will include the ward councillor concerned, municipal veterinary officer, officer in charge of the ABC centre, municipal medical officer and a representative of the State Animal Welfare Board. The panel will include representatives from the local body, veterinary department, health department, animal welfare bodies and the district society for prevention of cruelty to animals. The council also decided to direct govt and private institutions to take measures such as installing gates and boundary fences and maintaining cleanliness to prevent stray dogs from entering their premises. Each institution will also be asked to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate stray dog-related measures. Download the TOI App.
