Kolkata: The Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) has formally written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi , requesting that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shri Gyanesh Kumar be recommended for Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.
Highlighting Bengal’s long-standing history of political violence, intimidation, and electoral malpractice, Chatterjee emphasised that the 2026 polls were executed without bloodshed, terror, or rigging, effectively restoring voter confidence in the state.
In a letter sent on Wednesday, NCPI national president Jyoti Prokash Chatterjee praised Election Commission of India (ECI), under Kumar’s leadership, for conducting a “remarkably peaceful and credible West Bengal Assembly election” earlier this year. Chatterjee said: “By upholding the independence, neutrality, and discipline of the Election Commission, Kumar has reinforced the foundation of the Constitution and strengthened the faith of over a billion citizens in the ballot.”
