Kochi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) has released visuals of “stinking and unhygienic” toilets at the 180-year-old Sree Rama Varma (SRV) Govt Higher Secondary School here after conducting an audit as part of its social media campaign. School authorities, however, said the toilet building was due for demolition and alternative washrooms had been arranged for students.
School headmistress Seema T K said the toilet building had already been earmarked for demolition due to concerns over its structural condition. The visuals released by CJP showed cigarette butts near the urinals, cracks in the walls and the dilapidated condition of the toilet building.
The reels posted by CJP on Instagram showing the toilet building said the other facilities at the school were well maintained. The school has alternative toilets on the campus and students have been instructed to use them,” she said. The school had also sent a letter to the corporation earlier this month for expediting the demolition, she said, adding that the cigarette butts could have been discarded by labourers engaged in the ongoing renovation of an auditorium on the campus.
SRV was the first school in the state to be assessed by CJP as part of its nationwide ‘School Thik Karo’ (Fix the Schools) campaign. “The toilets are meant to be demolished. Officials from the Kochi Corporation had recently visited the school ahead of the demolition process.
Sanoop Dev, CJP’s South India coordinator, said the inspection was conducted on Tuesday.
