Kochi : The two-day CPM Ernakulam district extended committee meeting concluded with a public meeting in Tripunithura on Thursday.
The party noted that the number of organised workers in Ernakulam, an industrial district, had declined due to globalisation policies, while mass organisations and trade unions were also facing weakening influence.
The party leadership said the discussions were healthy and that the new suggestions would give further momentum to its political and organisational activities in the district. The meeting primarily discussed measures to strengthen working-class politics in the district. The meeting also observed that the decline in the influence of workers had affected the party’s political influence in the district. The party decided to focus on political and ideological outreach among workers in new-generation workplaces, including the IT sector. It will also undertake a detailed study of the issues faced by the middle class and prepare a report on them. The party will also intensify its interventions in the problems faced by farmers and issues concerning ecologically sensitive areas. As part of organisational changes, P A Peter from Palluruthy was elected to the district secretariat, while CPM Angamaly area secretary K P Rajeesh was inducted into the district committee. DYFI district secretary Nikhil Babu, president Bibin Varghese, Mahila association district secretary M B Shaini, Beena Baburaj and former NGO state leader PHM Ismail were elected as invitees to the district committee.
