Dharwad : A 55-year-old farmer was injured after a bear attacked him while he was working in his sugarcane field at Tabakadahonnihalli village in Kalghatgi taluk of Dharwad district on Wednesday.
Shankarappa was shifted to KMC-RI, Hubballi, for treatment and is reported to be recovering. The victim, Shankarappa Madiwalar, was working in the field when the bear suddenly attacked him. He raised an alarm, prompting farmers working in nearby fields to rush to his aid. The bear fled the spot after noticing the gathering.
Forest officials visited the spot after being alerted and collected details about the incident. They suspect that a bear, along with its two cubs, has been staying in the area. Footprints found at the scene have further indicated the presence of the animal. Range forest officer Arunkumar Astagi has advised villagers to avoid venturing into farms in the area until the bear is safely driven away.
