A release from association president S Lokesh said that after detailed discussion in the meeting recently, the following resolution was passed unanimously: “If any criminal case or civil suit is filed against any news channel or individual for making defamatory or derogatory statements against advocates and the legal profession without verifying the facts, no member of the association shall represent such news channels or individuals in those criminal or civil proceedings. ” According to him, in recent days, certain ‘irresponsible individuals’ have been making baseless and unverified remarks against advocates and the legal profession that are being circulated on social media. However, under the freedom of speech and expression, defamatory statements are not protected, the president said, adding that this resolution is not against the media as a whole, but only against those who damage the dignity of the legal profession without verifying facts. The association has received several complaints from its members in this regard. The legal profession is an integral part of the justice delivery system, and advocates, as officers of the court, play a vital role in securing justice for the public. Making disparaging remarks against the community without any basis not only harms the dignity of the profession but also weakens public confidence in the judicial system, it stated. The association fully respects the freedom of the press and always welcomes fact-based and constructive criticism. Lokesh clarified that the association is always ready to extend cooperation to the media. Download the TOI App.
