Mahatma Gandhi Sarvodaya Bhavan

Dnyanprakash Modani, the 77-year-old Gandhian thinker, who started the full-fledged centre to coincide with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2019, said that the principles and methods of Gandhiji can still strongly appeal to modern audiences if they are presented through a contemporary lens. Besides, the bhavan is also known as the main organiser of the city-level Gandhi jayanti celebrations on Oct 2 at the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Shahganj. As one of our goals, we endeavour to raise our collective understanding of society so that people will actually understand what the words of Einstein mean.

“With its inclusive approach, our centre brings together Gandhians under one roof, making it one of the few surviving spaces for non-violent, secular, and democratic discourse in the region,” he said. Our exhibition has captured the key moments of his life,” Modani said. “At a time when Gandhian institutions are struggling, it is our honest attempt to ensure the father of the nation does not remain only in history books, but becomes a living method of personal and social change,” Modani said. He added, “Great scientist Albert Einstein famously said that future generations will scarcely believe that a man like Gandhiji ever walked the earth.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : A building in the Silk Mill Colony of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has been quietly keeping the Gandhian thought alive for both younger and older generations. Known as the Mahatma Gandhi Sarvodaya Bhavan, the hub serves as a critical reference point for students, activists, and researchers seeking to explore Gandhian literature, khadi spinning, and the core concept of Sarvodaya—the welfare of all. A full-panel pictorial exhibition titled ‘Mohan se Mahatma’, tracing the journey of Mohandas to the Mahatma, is one of the highlights of the centre. “The evolution of Gandhiji from a commoner into a towering personality revered as the ‘Mahatma’ itself sets off a journey of inner transformation for many. The list of activities at the centre is long and diverse. It regularly conducts Sutkatai Prashikshan, which is training in spinning on the charkha—the symbol of self-reliance. It also runs classes in music, painting, sculpture, acting, and other arts. For students who have dropped out of the formal education system, the centre provides special educational support to bring them back into mainstream education. It also offers career guidance and counselling for school and college students. For those interested in deeper study, the centre conducts Grantha Shikshan, which includes study circles on the life and works of Gandhi, Phule, Ambedkar, and saint literature. To propagate the life, work, and philosophy of Gandhiji, it organises lectures, study classes, residential camps, and seminars, while also creating new literature. Its Sujana-Sajag Nagarik Abhiyan is a campaign to create aware, sensitive, and constitutionally committed citizens in the light of Gandhian thought. Notably, the establishment is entirely self-financed without a single rupee of govt grants, foreign funding, or even public donations—perhaps making it the only such institution in the country.
