Madurai: Students at Government Virudhunagar Medical College have opposed penalties of up to ₹5,000 imposed by the men’s hostel administration for using electrical appliances in their rooms without permission. A circular issued by the chief warden listed the confiscated items and prescribed penalties ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 for each violation. Students found using induction stoves, iron boxes, egg boilers, air coolers and mixers without prior approval have been asked to pay ₹5,000. Electric kettles, hair dryers, hair straighteners, sandwich makers and air fryers attract a ₹2,000 penalty.

The circular said students must obtain “prior permission” from the hostel administration before using the appliances. “Providing basic amenities is the responsibility of the hostel management rather than imposing steep penalties on students for meeting their everyday needs,” he said. The organisation sought “withdrawal of the circular, cancellation of the fines and immediate return of the seized appliances” to the students.

The action followed a surprise inspection at the men’s hostel on the Virudhunagar-Madurai four-way highway, during which authorities seized several appliances from students’ rooms. Those whose items were seized have been directed to remit the penalty into the hostel’s official bank account by the end of October before collecting their belongings. It also warned that students who fail to pay could have their No Objection Certificate withheld, while repeat violations could lead to eviction from the hostel. Download the TOI App.

SFI Madurai district president S Dilan Justin said students depended on several of the appliances for their daily needs and the administration should instead ensure adequate facilities in the hostel. The SFI criticised the decision and sought withdrawal of the circular.
