Nagpur: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nagpur Regional Unit, busted an inter-state drug trafficking operation and an illegal wildlife smuggling network in two separate operations within three days.

Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers, assisted by Railway Protection Force (RPF), seized 1.3 kg of amphetamine, valued at around Rs1.05 crore in the illicit market, from a woman travelling on Hazrat Nizamuddin-KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express on Sept 27. On Sept 29, the DRI Nagpur team intercepted an alleged wildlife trafficking network near Purada village in Gondia district . The leopard is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

DRI said the operation was part of its continuing enforcement against organised wildlife trafficking. The DRI team intercepted the woman at Nagpur railway station. During a detailed search of her luggage, officers detected a concealed hard-cardboard compartment behind the inner fabric lining of her suitcase. Two packages wrapped in blue-coloured carbon paper were recovered from the specially created cavity. The officers recovered a leopard skin and apprehended two persons allegedly involved in its illegal trade. The seized skin and the two apprehended persons were handed over to the Forest Range Officer, North Deoria Range, Gondia, for further legal action. Previous operations by the Nagpur unit have resulted in seizures including leopard skin in Ujjain, tiger bones in Seoni, pangolin scales in Pileru and Jagdalpur, and elephant ivory in Mysuru. The passenger was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced before the holiday court in Nagpur the same day.
