Mangaluru airport introduces Rs 50 drop-off fee for commercial cabs: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Mangaluru: Passengers travelling to Mangaluru International Airport in commercial cabs will now have to pay an additional airport access fee, with the operator introducing a Rs 50 charge for drop-offs and raising the pick-up fee from Rs 180 to Rs 200. The revised tariff came into effect on Oct 1 and applies only to commercial vehicles.

Private vehicles are exempt from the new access charges, an airport official said.

Under the revised tariff, commercial four-wheelers dropping off passengers will be charged Rs 50 if they exit the airport within eight minutes. The airport official said the Rs 50 drop-off charge would ultimately be passed on to the passenger, and would not be absorbed by the cab operator. Commercial four-wheelers will be charged Rs 200 for stays of up to 30 minutes, Rs 300 for 30 minutes to one hour, Rs 400 for one to two hours, Rs 500 for two to three hours, Rs 600 for three to four hours and Rs 1,200 for four to 24 hours. For private vehicles, the free time is pared to eight from 10 minutes.

The airport operator said access charges for commercial vehicles were standard practice at airports, and helped support the management and upkeep of landside facilities. It said the airport incurred expenses on security, electricity, infrastructure maintenance, traffic management and personnel, besides providing sanitation and other amenities for drivers and visitors. The revised tariff also increases progressively, based on the duration of stay. Download the TOI App.
