Mumbai: The Centre has approved the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Marathi at the Deccan College Postgraduate and Research Institute in Pune.
Marathi was granted classical language status in October 2024. In 2008 the state govt had set up a committee to determine if Marathi could be granted a classical status. In 2013 the committee submitted an interim report and then a final report to the linguistic committee of the Sahitya Akademi showing the language is at least 2,300 years old.
CM Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision on social media.
He said the decision, coming on the eve of Classical Marathi Language Day, was a matter of “immense joy” for people in Maharashtra, the country and Marathi speakers across the world. He said the state govt had been pursuing the proposal with the Centre ever since Marathi was granted classical language status. He said the state government has already started the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed centre of excellence and the central government’s approval had cleared the way for submitting it and securing the necessary funding.
The report with evidence showed the high antiquity of its early texts and recorded history over 1,500-2,000 years.
