Madurai: Madras high court has directed NHAI to file a report giving details about the number of automated speed detection radar cameras and speed indication display systems installed on Madurai-Theni highway in compliance with Motor Vehicles Act .

Citing information under RTI Act, he said between 2018 and 2026, more than 463 vehicular accidents were registered on the highway. Private buses cover the 39-kilometre distance between Theni and Usilampatti, which normally takes about 45 minutes, in just 30 minutes. The case was posted for hearing on Oct 12.

Installing speed control cameras at specific intervals along the routes leading to Madurai, Theni, Bodinayakanur, Cumbum, Kumily and Thevaram would greatly help in curbing road accidents, he said. Making installation of speed governors mandatory in every private bus and ensuring periodic monitoring by relevant govt officials would be sufficient.
