Prayagraj : A long-pending promotion exercise for LT grade teachers in UP govt secondary schools is set to move ahead, with the education department preparing a list of around 4,000 teachers for elevation to lecturer posts.
The exercise was originally to be completed by Sept 30, but preparation and verification of seniority lists delayed the process. The last promotion in the female cadre was carried out in Dec 2022, when 59 teachers in two subjects were promoted. The department had approached UPPSC about two years ago for the DPC, but the process stalled after the commission raised objections to vacancy proposals covering the 2019-20 to 2023-24 academic sessions.
Additional director of education (govt) Ajay Kumar Dwivedi said the promotion process would be completed soon. Under the existing rules, LT grade teachers who have completed five years of service are considered for promotion every year against available lecturer vacancies. However, the exercise has remained pending for years. Promotions in the male cadre have faced an even longer delay. UPPSC sought details on the dates and reasons for vacancies and certification that the seniority lists were free from disputes. It also flagged issues involving non-sequential numbering of women teachers and failure to earmark reservation for persons with disabilities against year-wise vacancies.

The education directorate is expected to approach Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) shortly to convene the departmental promotion committee (DPC), which will give formal approval to the promotions. Seniority-related disputes in the male cadre further delayed the exercise.
