Elections recorded an 81% turnout on Sept 28 for 2,950 contested seats

Agartala: TIPRA Motha Party maintained a strong lead in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections, claiming 2,803 of 3,470 seats declared by 6 pm, even as vote counting saw tensions, protests and road blockades across Tripura. BJP followed with 508 seats, while independents won 93, CPM got 40, IPFT secured 16 and Congress 10. Elections recorded an 81% turnout on Sept 28 for 2,950 contested seats.

Counting started at 8 am but faced delays due to isolated incidents resolved by police and administration, with no complaints from political parties. In Dhalai district’s Salema block, CPM reported blocked access for its agents at Maharani High School. Remaining seats were uncontested. Tensions flared in Sepahijala district at Poly Bari School, where TIPRA Motha supporters blocked roads, disrupting other parties’ access. Opposition functionaries protested at Jatrapur police station. In Khowai district, confrontations escalated outside Bharat Sardar Vidyalaya, necessitating a police lathi-charge after a crowd tried to breach security. Several people suffered injuries and were treated at Khowai District Hospital. Despite disturbances, counting continued under increased security, with authorities closely monitoring the process.
