They said water scarcity had hit farming and affected drinking water and fodder availability for livestock. Releasing limited water only to Chowlur and Kudlahalli lakes would not solve the problem, they said. They said farmers could not afford court proceedings and urged the taluk administration to initiate legal action at govt expense. Steps should be taken to release the pending ragi procurement payments without further delay,” state working president of the organisation Eechaghatta Siddaveerappa said.

The protesters lined up buffaloes on the road to highlight the problems caused by the prolonged drought . They demanded that water be supplied to all lakes in the taluk without discrimination between the left and right canals. Farmers also sought immediate removal of encroachments on lakes in Tumbenakere and Mavinkatte villages. They also raised the issue of delayed payments for ragi procured under the minimum support price scheme. Though five to six months had passed since procurement, payments had not been credited to farmers’ accounts. “The government should not play with the lives of farmers. Tahsildar Tirupati Patil visited the protest site and assured farmers that pending ragi payments would be credited within a day or two and action would be taken against lake encroachments. Chitradurga : Farmers affiliated with Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, Hosadurga taluk unit, staged a protest near Mavinkatte Gate on Monday, demanding adequate water for lakes and agricultural lands under the Bhadra Upper Project and a permanent irrigation system.
