New Delhi: On Oct 1, a doctor from Outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar found his world turned upside down when he received an extortion call from a man claiming to be associated with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi .
The man allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakh, leaving the doctor alarmed but determined to approach police. What followed was an unexpected twist: the ‘extortionist’ turned out to be one of his patients, Himanshu Jain (35), a resident of Pooth Gram Sabha. The caller demanded Rs 25 lakh as extortion money and said he knew the personal details of the doctor. One was registered in 2018 under sections 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt, in order to commit extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC at Subhash Palace police station.
The doctor told officers that someone called and threatened him on his mobile, according to police sources. Police said he had been suffering from a skin infection and was visiting the doctor for the past three years. During this period, he became familiar with the doctor’s routine and began planning to target him, believing that he was well-off and could pay a large amount of money, police said. After preparing the groundwork, Jain allegedly posed as a gangster while contacting the doctor and demanded “protection money”. He threatened to harm the doctor and his family if the money was not paid, police said, adding that Jain gathered several personal details about the doctor before making the extortion call, apparently to make the threat appear credible.
Cops analysed the location of the caller and instructed the doctor to continue talking to the suspect and recording their conversations. For this, he also purchased a new SIM card. Jain was found to be involved in two other criminal cases as well. A similar case was registered against him at Preet Vihar police station two years later.
Jain’s interrogation revealed that he allegedly targeted the doctor after closely studying his routine and personal details.
The next day, the caller told him to hand him the money near Jaipur Golden Hospital, Rohini. DCP (Outer) Vikram Singh said the arrest was made within a few hours of receiving the complaint, and that further investigation is under way. A police team was deployed at the spot after CCTV cameras were analysed to identify the caller. The cops caught him when he came to take the money.
