Ahmedabad : Judicial work was disrupted on Monday after the Bar Council of Gujarat called on its members to boycott court proceedings in protest against the new Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026. The lawyers took out a bike rally and staged demonstrations outside court campuses and at Income Tax Circle to register their objection to the proposed change of jurisdiction for rent-related disputes from small causes courts to the bureaucracy.

Even as the lawyers’ protest paralysed court hearings due to the absence of the advocates in courtrooms, advocate general Kamal Trivedi submitted before a bench of Gujarat High Court that almost all the members of the BCG and govt authorities under the leadership of the deputy chief minister met on Sunday to resolve the issue.

The advocate general said that despite the assurance from the deputy CM, Bar Council and Gujarat High Court Bar Association chose to go ahead with the strike, which is prohibited by Supreme Court . Meanwhile, office-bearers of the Ahmedabad Small Causes Court Bar Association said they had received no communication from the state govt on the issue and would continue their protest as decided in last week’s meeting. The top law officer submitted that the Bar Council members were assured by the minister that the Bill would not receive the governor’s assent, as the lawyers had been objecting to it.
