Rooftop solar system

Gandhinagar : Gujarat has generated 95MW of solar power through rooftop systems installed on 6,014 govt buildings and is now planning its biggest expansion of the programme, with similar systems proposed for more than 15,000 govt buildings during 2026-27. Quoting climate change minister Arjun Modhwadia , an official statement issued on Monday said rooftop solar systems were installed on 1,377 govt buildings in 2025-26, adding 17.1MW of renewable energy capacity. The state has earmarked Rs 314 crore for the programme in 2026-27. Of this, Rs 278 crore has been allocated for general govt buildings, Rs 3 crore for buildings under social justice and empowerment department and Rs 33 crore for those under the tribal development department. The initiative has been implemented by Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) since 2011-12 under the climate change department. It provides 100% capital expenditure support from the department’s annual budget for rooftop solar installations on state govt buildings.

“The target this year is to install rooftop solar systems on 15,000 govt buildings, adding around 65 MW of solar capacity,” Modhwadia said. Minister of state for climate change Pravin Mali said the installations would help reduce conventional electricity consumption and power expenditure in govt offices while lowering pollution associated with conventional power generation. “The system is currently monitoring significant capacities, including 142.5MW of solar and 68.3MW of wind power generation,” Modhwadia said.
