NEW DELHI: India captain Shreyas Iyer has made a stunning leap into the top 10 of the ICC T20I batting rankings after his breathtaking maiden century, while Axar Patel has also broken into the elite list following a dramatic rise in the latest update. Iyer has jumped 18 places to seventh in the T20I batting rankings after smashing an unbeaten 102 off just 43 balls in India’s series opener against the West Indies in Lucknow. The century, the first of his T20I career, has propelled the India skipper into the top 10 for the first time. The 31-year-old’s explosive knock has also strengthened India’s presence at the top end of the shortest-format batting rankings. India now have four players inside the top 10, with Ishan Kishan at No. 1, Abhishek Sharma at No. 2, Iyer at No. 7 and Tilak Varma at No. 10.
All-rounder Axar Patel has climbed 16 places to seventh among T20I bowlers, joining the top 10 after a strong week for India’s spin department. 1 spot, replacing Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed. Bangladesh’s Nasum Ahmed has climbed three places to eighth, while teammate Mahedi Hasan has made an even bigger jump, moving up 10 spots to ninth. The changes mean there are three new entrants inside the top 10 in a busy update for T20I bowlers. West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford, who struck a half-century in the series opener against India, has also been rewarded, moving 10 places to 37th in the batting rankings. Gill’s unbeaten 223 in the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, which helped India clinch the series, has taken him to 841 rating points. Among ODI bowlers, West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has climbed 12 places to 10th, reaching a new career-high ranking after claiming four wickets in the series against India. Iyer’s rise is among the biggest movements in the latest rankings and comes after an innings that underlined his ability to dominate an international attack from the outset.
