Chennai: TVK condemned the arrest of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday and has reiterated the party’s opposition to Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Former DMk minister P K Sekarbabu alleged that as many as 14 lakh names were removed through SIR in Chennai alone. “Despite such large scale deletions, Rahul Gandhi has not spoke about the impact of SIR over assembly elections in Tamil Nadu,’’ he said.
Such an approach should be stopped,’’ a statement on TVK’s official handle said. The party continues to maintain the same position even now,’’ the post said. “TVK condemns the arrest of leaders and MPs, including the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who staged a protest in Delhi against the SIR process. The manner in which they were arrested is objectionable. The statement comes after criticism from DMK that TVK, despite being an ally of Congress, was silent on protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. “Even before coming to power, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had opposed the SIR process. Ministers K G Arun Raj and A Rajmohan too condemned the arrest of Rahul. Meanwhile, DMK stepped up its attack on Rahul Gandhi demanding to break his alleged silence on voter deletions through SIR in Tamil Nadu.
