Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadvi passes away at 92
Lucknow: Noted Islamic scholar, educationist, Arabic language expert and author Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadvi died at 92 on Wednesday. Born in Mau in 1934, Azmi Nadvi joined Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama in Lucknow in 1952 for higher studies. He was widely recognised for his contribution to Arabic language and journalism, and was closely associated with the Arabic monthly Al-Ba’sul Islami, becoming its editor in 1979.
He served as chancellor of Integral University and was Mohtamim (rector) of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, an institution he was associated with for more than seven decades as a student, teacher, administrator and scholar. After completing his education under senior scholars at the seminary, he joined its faculty and later held key academic and administrative roles, including head of the Arabic department. Through the publication, he helped take Indian Islamic scholarship and contemporary intellectual discussions to readers in the Arab world.
He received an honorary DLitt in 2019. Nadvi authored several works in Arabic and Urdu, including “Islam and the West,” and his work was the subject of research studies on Arabic journalism and literature. Download the TOI App.
He was among the founding members of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board , which honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year.
