Mandya : A 13-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after a crocodile attacked him while he was swimming in Virija Canal near Balahalli, close to Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary.

Vishal Rawat, son of Ratiram Rawat from Borgaon village in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district, was swimming with four friends when the crocodile caught him by the neck. His friends raised an alarm and pelted the reptile with stones and beat it with sticks, forcing it to release him. Residents expressed concern over what they described as increasingly frequent crocodile sightings in the canal. They recalled a recent incident in which a crocodile reportedly killed and devoured a goat grazing on the canal bank. Forest personnel are monitoring the area and trying to capture and relocate the crocodile to Cauvery River . Download the TOI App.
Vishal’s parents had migrated from Maharashtra for sugarcane harvesting work. The family is staying near Maramma Temple at Balahalli with other agricultural labourers.
Hospital sources said Vishal suffered serious injuries to his neck and windpipe, besides wounds on his chin, chest, hands and legs. Doctors said he was under close observation and was likely to remain in hospital for another two to three days. After receiving first aid at a local govt hospital, he was shifted to KR Hospital in Mysuru.
