Former Indian cricketer Gyanendra Pandey has been appointed head coach of the UP Ranji Trophy team. He spoke to Fazal Khan about his new role and the team combination. Excerpts: Q1: How do you see this fresh responsibility, with seasoned players like Rinku and Yash Dayal in the side? A: I have handled this role before as well and worked with full sincerity. I had guided the Ranji Trophy team to the final twice and to the semifinal once. After that, I also took my team to the one-day tournament final. I am thankful to the UPCA for trusting in my abilities. Rinku brings a lot of discipline to the team, and I’m happy to see Yash back in the side, making a solid pace trio with Kartik Tyagi and Abhinandan. Q: How do you assess the team combination? A: Skipper Aryan Juyal is very disciplined and focused and knows how to bring the best out of the players. Besides having a good pace attack, the spin department also looks great, with Zeeshan Ansari, Kartik Yadav and Vansh Chaudhary. Karan Sharma has also proved himself to be more than a handy bowler. Q: What should be the strategy for home matches? A: We should make the most of our home conditions. Green Park has always been very lucky for me, and we will try to take full advantage of the conditions. Q: What is your strategy against Bihar in the opening match? A: We are not taking them lightly at all. These days, every team is evenly matched, and the side that plays better on the day will win. Our batting and bowling are both strong, and everyone is capable of performing. Q: Do you feel you got too little time for Ranji Trophy preparations? We have always had to work across three formats. I have been given this task, and my aim is to prove myself in it. My effort now is to do well and guide the youngsters. Download the TOI App.
