NEW DELHI: The University of Toronto has announced a $100-million investment in doctoral education through a new scholarship programme aimed at attracting high-performing PhD students to research some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
The university said the programme will emphasise complex problem-solving, experiential learning, collaboration and cross-sector engagement. “This is a visionary approach to PhD education,” Joshua Barker, dean of the School of Graduate Studies and vice-provost of graduate research and education, said, according to U of T News. The university said candidates will be assessed not only on academic excellence but also on their record of innovation and real-world problem-solving.
He added that the programme would establish “a new standard for interdisciplinary, real-world problem-solving at the highest levels. This could include students pursuing applied innovation as well as those undertaking major interdisciplinary research.
The Presidents’ Impact Scholarship Program will bring together at least 12 PhD scholars each year around a common research theme, with the focus changing annually. The programme is backed by an anonymous $50-million gift and an equal contribution from the university, according to U of T News. The university is expected to issue a call for applications soon, with the first cohort scheduled to begin studies in September 2027.
The programme will connect scholars with researchers across the university, including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members working on related areas. U of T Entrepreneurship will also be among the university communities supporting engagement and collaboration.
