CM Suvendu Adhikari hands over the compensation cheque to a flood-affected resident at a programme in Manikchak on Thursday

Kolkata/Malda: Bengal govt has sent a Rs 3,300-crore proposal to Centre aiming for a permanent solution to Malda and Murshidabad’s recurring flood and river erosion crisis, CM Suvendu Adhikari said on Thursday. Centre has already approved Rs 500 crore, he added.

State govt was providing a Rs 241.6-crore compensation package for 24,595 people affected by the latest floods and erosion in Malda, Adhikari said. On Thursday, around 5,000 poor families affected by the floods were provided with five days’ food supplies along with other relief materials, including new clothes as a Puja gift. The CM said around Rs 1,700 crore could become available from central govt’s Calamity Relief Fund, alleging that the amount had not been properly utilised by the previous govt.

Quoting district magistrate Rajanvir Singh, Adhikari said there had been no reported deaths from snakebite or diarrhoea during the latest flood situation.

A team from IIT Kanpur, which had visited the affected areas, has also been asked to prepare a detailed project report for a permanent solution to the erosion issue,” the CM said at a programme in Manikchak, where he handed over compensation and relief materials to several flood-affected residents. “Families whose houses have been completely damaged will receive Rs 1.80 lakh, while those whose houses have suffered partial damage will get Rs 90,000,” the CM said after an aerial survey of flood-affected areas. “The work associated with a permanent solution will start soon, after the water recedes. Funds will not be an issue. If necessary, we will seek funds from NABARD , ADB and other sources. Our govt is committed to put an end to the woes of flood-affected people.
