Mexican wrestler El Hijo de Fishman has been arrested in Hidalgo after referee Gerardo Germán Pineda, known as “El Búho,” died during a wrestling event in Mineral de la Reforma. Police responded to a report of a person who had died inside the venue during the event, according to El Universal Hidalgo. Emergency workers were called to the venue, but Pineda had already died by the time they arrived, according to several Mexican reports. The company said it was following the case and had arranged legal support for El Hijo de Fishman while the authorities carried out their investigation.
Pineda was involved in the match when he received a move described in local reports as a piledriver or martinete. Authorities are investigating the incident.
The promotion also said its lawyer was in contact with Pineda’s family and their legal representatives. It said the goal was to respect everyone involved while the legal process continues. “We deeply regret the loss of a life and express our solidarity with his family, friends and colleagues in the wrestling business,” the company said in its statement. The company said it would avoid giving further information that could affect the investigation or the legal process.
El Patrón Espectáculos also asked wrestlers, fans and media members not to spread rumors or unconfirmed details about the case.
