An anonymous donor gave $1 million to help nurses repay student loans at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, after recognising the care they provided during several hospital stays. In the first round of assistance, all 179 nurses who applied received grants of up to $3,600. By March 2026, the four hospitals had received donations totalling $4.26 million, helping 706 nurses with student loan costs. Emmy McManus, a registered nurse who had worked at Lankenau Medical Center for 30 years, struggled to repay her student loans while dealing with serious illnesses in her family. The story attracted wider attention after The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on the Lankenau donation in June 2025. The coverage inspired another anonymous donor to contribute $1 million to Paoli Hospital, also part of Main Line Health, to help its nurses with student loan debt. The original donor gave another $1 million to Lankenau after receiving thank-you letters from nurses. Riddle Hospital in Media, Pennsylvania, received a further $260,000, while Bryn Mawr Hospital received a separate $1 million donation. Together, the contributions brought the total across Lankenau, Paoli, Riddle and Bryn Mawr hospitals to $4.26 million by March 2026. The donations supported 706 nurses, with grants of up to $3,600 available to help with education debt.

The donation offered financial relief to nurses facing education debt alongside family responsibilities and other expenses. The initiative later extended beyond Lankenau Medical Center, with donations supporting nurses at three other hospitals in the Main Line Health system. After earning her nursing degree, she faced mounting expenses as her parents required medical care, special meals and eventually hospice services. The financial pressure made it difficult to manage her education debt alongside her family responsibilities. Among the nurses who benefited was Damacia Gilbert, a single mother who had been taking extra shifts to manage her expenses while paying student loans and covering preschool costs for her son. The grant offered relief from those competing financial pressures. The Paoli donation demonstrated how the original gift had encouraged another donor to support nurses facing similar challenges. The initiative expanded as additional anonymous donors contributed to student loan relief at other Main Line Health hospitals.

The grant funded by the anonymous donor helped ease that burden. Another nurse who received assistance, emergency room nurse Samantha Baldwin-Arroyo, was also managing student loan repayments while caring for her mother, who had chronic illnesses. The grant helped cover payments on one of her student loans.

Baldwin-Arroyo had previously undergone cancer treatment herself.
