Mumbai: A Santacruz (East) businessman has accused his driver of stealing Rs 10 lakh kept in an SUV for shopping ahead of his daughter’s wedding in Nov. Santacruz police registered a theft case against Altaf Ahmed (27), who has allegedly been absconding with the cash and SUV key since Wednesday. Complainant IG Dabbawala (46), who sells used cars, approached the police after checking the footage at Season Mall, which allegedly showed Ahmed removing the cash bag and key from the vehicle.

Police are examining CCTV footage and his escape route to trace him.

Dabbawala later visited Makhdoom Baba Dargah in Mahim to offer prayers and joined his family at 6.30 pm. When the family emerged at 8 pm, Ahmed was missing, and his phone was switched off.

Before entering the shop, Dabbawala’s son told Ahmed about the money and asked him to guard the bag. Dabbawala found the bag missing from the vehicle and subsequently checked the CCTV footage, according to the FIR. The family was carrying the cash when it visited Season Cloth Shop near Santacruz West railway station. The driver and SUV were then outside the shop.

Dabbawala, his wife, daughter and son had gone shopping on Wednesday evening for the daughter’s wedding, scheduled for the first week of Nov.
