Nashik : The average wholesale price of onions at Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) declined by 17% over the past nine days owing to the arrival of fresh kharif onions in South Indian states and Madhya Pradesh, reducing demand for onions from Nashik. The average wholesale onion price had reached Rs4,450 per quintal on Oct 1, but declined gradually by Rs 750 per quintal to Rs3,700 per quintal on Friday (Oct 9). Around 6,000 quintals of onions were auctioned at Lasalgaon on Friday.

Manoj Jain, an onion trader, said demand from North Indian markets for Nashik onions has weakened due to fresh arrivals from Madhya Pradesh and southern states.

This has led to a gradual decline in wholesale prices over the past nine days,” he said. In the retail markets of Nashik city, onions are currently being sold between Rs60 and Rs70 per kg. Traders attributed the decline to the arrival of fresh kharif onions in states such as Andhra Pradesh , Karnataka , and Madhya Pradesh. The increased availability of fresh produce has reduced demand for Nashik’s summer onions that were harvested during March and April and are currently arriving at APMCs. Exporters are preferring newly harvested kharif onions to the older summer crop, further reducing demand for Nashik onions. Consequently, wholesale prices at Lasalgaon, Asia’s largest onion market, have come under pressure in recent days. “Exporters are also preferring fresh kharif onions over the older summer stocks.

On Friday, the minimum and maximum wholesale onion prices were recorded at Rs1,000 and Rs 4,361 per quintal, respectively. “Moreover, the harvest of kharif onions is expected to begin in Dhule district from the first week of next month,” he said. Jain added that fresh kharif onions from Rajasthan are expected to enter the market by the end of this month. Download the TOI App.
