The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kanpur: A 45-year-old woman employee of the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS) in Saifai, Etawah, climbed a nearly 200-foot tower on Friday afternoon, alleging that police had ignored her complaint regarding a domestic dispute involving her son’s in-laws and had threatened her.

The woman, Meena , alleged that her son’s in-laws, who had arrived from a village in the Elau police station area of Mainpuri district, assaulted her and broke her chain, ring and bangles, according to police. Station in-charge Bhupendra Rathi said Meena and the other party had been involved in a scuffle and that a video of the incident had surfaced. He said police had called both parties to the station and counselled them.

She claimed that when she went to the police station to lodge a complaint, the station in-charge threatened her instead of hearing her out. She further alleged that police had ignored several of her previous complaints. Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Aadesh Kumar, medical superintendent Dr Amit Singh, chief security officer Rupesh Singh, along with other university officials and police personnel, reached the spot and urged her to come down. Later, nursing officers Meena Kumari and Anita Prajapati, who were on duty with her, assured her that the university administration and the employees’ organisation would hear her grievance and raise the matter with senior officials. Rathi termed Meena’s allegations of being threatened by police as baseless and claimed that she had behaved indecently at the station. He added that a dispute was also ongoing between her son and daughter-in-law and that police had tried to pacify both sides.
