Nashik : Police detained 26 people, including six women, on Saturday evening during a protest march demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The protesters were part of a group of around 250 to 300 people who joined a nationwide agitation seeking the CEC’s resignation. Senior police officers said the 26 were detained under sections 68 and 69 of the Maharashtra Police Act. Police said the situation remained under control and no untoward incident was reported during the march. Demonstrators gathered at Ashok Stambh before starting a march through key city roads. Police moved in soon after the march began and detained several participants. Despite the action, the protest continued through Meher Signal, MG Road and Sangli Bank Signal before heading towards CBS Road. The protesters carried placards and banners demanding the scrapping of the SIR process, restoration of voting through ballot papers and the resignation of the CEC.
