Amravati murder solved in 4 hours, minor among 2 held

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Amravati : The local crime branch (LCB) and Khallar police in Amravati Rural on Saturday cracked the murder of a 45-year-old man at Nalawada in Daryapur taluka within four hours and nabbed two persons, including a juvenile in conflict with law.

Deepak Atmaram Umbarekar (45), a resident of Malwada-Nalawada, was found murdered with stab injuries in the stomach at his residence on Saturday morning. Based on technical analysis and secret information, LCB found that the murder was allegedly committed by the deceased’s neighbour Sumit Hiralal alias Harish Bhonde (19), who had fled after the crime. Over that old enmity, at around 2 am on Saturday, he, along with his cousin — a juvenile in conflict with law — entered the victim’s house and stabbed him in the stomach.

Khallar police and the local crime branch launched parallel investigations.

Police said the suspect initially tried to mislead investigators, but later he confessed after sustained interrogation. He told police that he had an old dispute with Deepak Umbarekar. A team from Khallar police station and LCB rushed to the spot. A spot panchnama was conducted. The body had sharp weapon injuries on the abdomen, while bloodstains were found at the scene. Acting on the tip-off, the team traced him to Balgaon in Amravati and took him into custody. Both were apprehended and handed over to Khallar Police for further legal proceedings. The action was carried out under the guidance of superintendent of police Nikesh Kadam and additional SP Abhishek, with LCB PI Dattatray Mundhe and API Mangesh Tkade.
