Officials said inspections of 275 industrial units and sheds in areas adjoining Dattanagar have been completed so far. The scrutiny found 17 plating units violating environmental norms, prompting MPCB to issue closure notices. Following the action, MIDC has disconnected water supply to nine of the 17 units, while steps are underway to cut water supply to the remaining units. “According to the analysis report, the groundwater was found to be contaminated, with total chromium levels recorded at 45 ppm.

A senior MPCB official said five other industrial units have been issued show-cause notices and asked to explain why closure proceedings should not be initiated against them. Based on the findings, inspections of industries in the area have been initiated, and further investigations are underway to trace the source of contamination,” an MPCB official said. Officials said the ongoing survey is examining the nature of manufacturing activities carried out by industrial units, verifying permissions and statutory documents, and checking compliance with pollution-control norms.

Nashik : The discovery of chromium-contaminated groundwater in Dattanagar has triggered a sweeping crackdown on industrial units in Ambad MIDC, with authorities moving against polluting factories and launching a large-scale audit of industrial operations in the estate. In a joint drive, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have surveyed hundreds of industrial units to trace the source of contamination and identify unauthorised or non-compliant operations. The violations surfaced after inspectors found that effluent treatment plants at several units were either not functioning or operating under suspicious conditions. Authorities have also directed the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) to disconnect power supply to the erring units. The intensified action follows complaints from residents about yellowish and contaminated borewell water in Dattanagar and nearby localities on the city’s outskirts. The crackdown follows a joint inspection by MPCB, MIDC and NMC after directions from guardian minister Girish Mahajan, environment minister Pankaja Munde and mayor Himgauri Aher. With groundwater contamination sparking alarm among residents, authorities are now racing to identify the source of pollution while tightening scrutiny of industries operating in one of Nashik’s largest industrial estates.
