85% surge in imported wheels in 3 yrs — Exotic cars zooming

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Within seconds, the high-end sports car disappeared down the road, offering only a fleeting glimpse of a vehicle rarely seen on Nagpur’s streets. Nagpur: A Ferrari speeding past Law College Square towards Ladies Club Square on Saturday night left motorists surprised, its brief appearance turning into a big talking point.

The two offices registered 109 imported vehicles in 2025-26, against 59 in 2023-24 — a jump of nearly 85% in three years. The combined registrations rose to 82 in 2024-25 before climbing further in the latest financial year. The 33% year-on-year increase indicates a steady rise in the number of imported vehicles entering the city’s official vehicle records. Nagpur city (MH-31) recorded 32 registrations in 2023-24, 45 in 2024-25 and 66 in 2025-26. At Nagpur East RTO (MH-49), the corresponding numbers were 27, 37 and 43. Together, the two offices registered 250 imported vehicles over the three-year period.

At Japanese Square, another imported high-end SUV drew attention when it stopped at a traffic signal. Such sightings, once unusual enough to become instant conversation starters, appear to be increasingly finding a place in the city’s changing automobile landscape. The growing fascination with imported wheels is reflected in registration figures compiled by the Nagpur East and Nagpur city regional transport offices (RTOs).

RTO City’s annual registrations more than doubled over the three-year period, while the East office recorded a rise of about 59%. However, the RTO figures cover imported vehicles as recorded by the two offices, a senior official said, adding they do not necessarily capture the entire luxury car market, which also includes premium vehicles manufactured or assembled in India. From performance-oriented sports cars to luxury SUVs, imported vehicles stand apart for their design, engineering, brand value and price tags. Their appearance on city roads often attracts attention, particularly when they are spotted at busy junctions alongside everyday hatchbacks, sedans and two-wheelers. The department, however, does not share information on specific makes and models purchased by owners. The data also shows that imported vehicle registrations have increased in both RTO jurisdictions, although the pace of growth differs. The numbers provide a measurable indication of the expanding presence of imported vehicles in Nagpur. And while a Ferrari may take only seconds to cross a junction, its appearance can leave motorists talking long after it has vanished from sight. Download the TOI App.
