Cops bust multiplex piracy racket, arrest 1

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Kolkata : A major movie piracy operation active across prominent multiplexes in the city has been unearthed, leading to the apprehension of a key suspect and the launch of a broader police investigation into an organised illicit filming ring.

The first incident was flagged during a 1.10 pm screening of a Hindi feature ‘India Story’ on July 24 at a prominent Elgin Road shopping mall multiplex. Two months later, on Sept 19, distributors reported another breach during the 9.05 am show of the English title at another multiplex. Further digital checks and booking histories confirmed the suspect’s presence at multiple past piracy sites, establishing a recurring pattern of targeted digital theft.

Officers from the local police station were immediately summoned to the scene, where the caught operative was taken into custody alongside seized electronics. A formal complaint has been submitted to Kolkata Police requesting the registration of an FIR against the detained individual and his unidentified accomplices. Investigators are now focused on analysing the offender’s mobile phones, bank transfers, and digital footprint to trace the network responsible for distributing pirated files online and identify the remaining members of the syndicate.
