For the area’s traders, it means business worth almost Rs 2 crore over the festive weekend. New Delhi: Every year during Navratri , brightly coloured chaniya cholis, mirror-work ghagras, traditional jewellery and vibrant dupattas draw large crowds to Gujarati Lane in Janpath.
Traders said the markets remained closed Saturday and Sunday and disruptions continued for the past two days, even though metro services resumed Tuesday. This year, however, barricades, traffic diversions and restricted access amid heavy police deployment have kept shoppers away, leaving shopkeepers worried about losing out on the most lucrative days of the season. For traders, the timing could hardly be worse. Navratri is among the most important periods of the year for shops selling traditional Gujarati clothing and accessories, as customers prepare for nine nights of garba, dandiya and other festivities. The demand for colourful outfits, embellished fabrics and matching jewellery usually brings a steady stream of buyers to the lane, with weekends seeing particularly heavy footfall.
