DHAKA: Nobel laureate and former Bangladesh interim govt chief adviser Muhammad Yunus was confronted by a group of Awami League supporters at New York’s John F Kennedy airport, who termed him a “terrorist” for “killing civilians, arresting thousands and destroying democracy in Bangladesh”.
Why did you arrest 2,00,000 people?…
Bangladesh govt condemned the harassment of the former chief adviser, while the PM’s information and broadcasting adviser Zahed Ur Rahman said govt views the incident — a video of which has surfaced online — as “Awami terror” and necessary action will be taken. The foreign ministry said it has asked its mission in NY to take up the matter with law enforcement agencies. “You killed a thousand people in Bangladesh. You terrorist! Why did you come here? He (Yunus) killed a thousand police in my country. He destroyed democracy,” a supporter of the party, was heard saying as a wheelchair-bound Yunus was leaving the airport Monday.
